Day 12 - Lack of Motivation

What Are You Going To Do When Motivation Wanes?

Today's #healthyhabitaccountabilitychallenge is all about #motivation, or more specifically, what to do when you have a severe lack of it.

I love #MotivationMonday, #WellnessWednesday, and all sorts of  #positiveenergy and motivation quotes. As a #nutritioncoach and #fitnesspro, I think they can be a powerful catalyst for anyone wanting to make #healthybehavior #habitchanges.

Motivation will wane.

It will.

It's called being human. And that's the reality of why creating #habitchange is so vital to do the #hardwork required day-after-day-after-day to achieve the goal.

In a recent blog post called Stop Waiting on Motivation: Learning to Lean on Discipline to Build Habits featured on The Ready State, Dr. Kelly Starrett wrote:

"It's hard to get motivated to train because of quarantine."
It's a common refrain we're hearing among clients and gym members.
Yes, our lives have been turned upside down. Or inside out. Outside in, really.
What's the answer?
We know what it is NOT: waiting for motivation.

During this time of #shelterinplace due to #COVID19, I feel that it's a challenge to stay motivated to accountability and habit change day-after-day.

It's easy to stick to your nutrition and fitness plan when you have control over your world, and feeling happy and stressfree. With the long days of staying home, let's face it, the choice of Netflix and chill is overpowering when the sun's not shining.

Many of us are struggling because we're sad, depressed, discouraged. You know the conversation; it's whatever excuse you convince yourself of because you're just not feeling it.

Pre #coronavirus, it also happened. Motivation wanes, and I can 100% assure you it happens to EVERYONE, myself included!

So with this normalcy in mind, I thought I'd share some tips and tricks to help you overcome these days and times. Many of these are things I've done myself to find the #internalmotivation to stick to the #longtermplan.

  • Make a #visionboard with your #why

  • Write down your #motivation quotes and post around the house

  • Hire a #coach to support you and give you a fierce love kick in the pants when necessary

  • Express your vulnerability to your #tribe of friends and family

  • Give yourself permission to take some time off and evaluate

  • Practice gratitude

  • Start journaling

  • Switch up the routine - try something different/new

  • Prioritize you. Put your fitness into your calendar.

  • Put on your workout clothes and lace up your shoes.

I'm sure if I sat there longer, I'd be able to come up with more ideas. The point is, you have to figure out what you can implement and works for you.

Because there will be days when you battle your old #mindset #behaviors AND #emotions and having an #optionB can make all the difference in the world

Knowing WHAT your #endresult (goal), it won't get you what you want no matter how much you try to stay #motivated.

When you implement a #plan and #process, you WILL.

Set yourself up for #success. Establishing and focusing on your #why and #corevalues is far more likely to drive you to make #lifestylechanges needed to the positive results.

Motivation will wane, so the discipline of habit formation is what will get you through.

“At some point, the pain of not doing it becomes greater than the pain of doing it.”
Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

What’s your plan for staying motivated when it wanes?
