WHY I DO WHAT I DO
My story of how I came to doing what I do goes all the way back to receiving the gift of learning to instruct Pilates back in 1998. I had the GREAT fortune of meeting Moira Stott that January, sitting in on here "this is what matwork Pilates is" workshop, and being her assistant for the morning.
I had also invited my fitness director from another facility (Decathlon Athletic Club) to attend, which she did, and she was hooked. We must add STOTT Pilates to the offerings at Decathlon and it's sister company the Calhoun Beach Club.
Decathlon paid for an intensive mat work certification weekend for me with Physical Mind, and then paid for ALL my STOTT Pilates education in the Matwork and Reformer (Essential through Advanced). It was so much work and studying with two small babies at home. I'd leave the house as soon as my husband walked in the door to go out and study and practice for 3-5 hours at a time. It was a huge and worthwhile endeavor, and after six months of this, I passed my practical and written exams on the first try with flying colors.
In May 1999, I became a Certified STOTT Pilates instructor in both the Matwork and Reformer and went on to study the method extensively focusing on injuries and rehabilitation for special populations. The years of working with clients in chronic pain combined with my educational background helped me bridge the gap between memorizing science and art of identifying and assessing structural imbalances and teaching it in a way that people could both understand AND apply.
I studied at the University of Manitoba (Canada) and earned a Bachelor of Recreation Studies (1991) and Bachelor of Physical Education (Kinesiology Tract) (1995) with minors in Sociology and Geriatrics. Thus began my lifelong love of studying the body. To this day, I continue to learn, take courses and additional certifications and teach the sciences of movement analysis and corrective exercise techniques. I earned my Posture Alignment Specialist Level 1 certification from Egoscue University in 2007, Level 2 in 2009 and then went on to teach for Egoscue University's in-house certification program from 2013-2013. Later that year, I (2013) I earned my National Posture Institute Certified Posture Specialist and The BioMechanics Method Corrective Exercise Specialist certifications. Along the way, I studied and received my Comprehensive Certification with STOTT Pilates, CoreStrength Vinyasa Yoga, Foundation Training, ACE Group Fitness, and Mobility WOD.
I opened Pain Free Posture MN in June of 2002 (in my home, setting up my basement as a mind/body/wellness studio) as a way to educate and assist clients improve posture, develop core strength, enhance athletic performance and activities of daily living, and most importantly eliminate and help others from developing chronic pain in their own lives. There were many sacrifices made having a business in my home, but upon reflection, the testimonials, goals accomplished and successes made it all worthwhile and more. It allowed me to have my cake and eat it too, meaning I could raise my family, and help many people while doing it!
I was able to move my business to the upstairs area of CrossFit 5885 in Apple Valley, Minnesota in December 2016. With a private and much larger studio space, I am currently able to work more hours, offer more group classes, and see a much more full range of clients of all ages and abilities. I've gained experience working with clients who are pre-surgical to strengthen and correct movement patterns before reconstruction, post-rehabilitative to fill in the gap after physical therapy, athletes who want to reduce repetitive stress/chronic pain or address, correct and improve movement patterns to individuals who need coaching in nutrition, body composition changes or how to improve overall fitness.
Additionally, Deb had the great privilege and honor to write with regularity as a blog contributor for Puori, and to date continue to mentor and coach other instructors in a wide variety of fields.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband Bill and traveling/attending my three very active kids sports and life activities/moments. I enjoy coaching and participating in CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, and mountain biking.
My mission is to help real people address and transform challenges they are facing and successfully overcome them. Be it to eliminate chronic muscle and joint pain, change body composition, or improve strength and overall fitness. I infuse my teaching style with an honest, down-to-earth mix of Eastern and Western training techniques, and actively work to make the concepts of goal setting, pain relief and body/mind transformation both accessible AND achievable!
I suffered from severe food and environmental allergies myself. As a child through my early twenties, I was always ill, swollen, weak and irritable. There was a traumatic car accident at the age of 11, and another major illness requiring ICU hospitalization the following year.
At this time I threw myself into competitive athletics to try and strengthen my weak and scarred lungs and body, and this is where she discovered my love of teaching, movement, and more importantly, how those two things made me feel better in every area of my life.
As my athletic career developed, injuries came — a T4/T5 disruption, rhomboid tear, rotator cuff injury, many severe ankles sprain to name a few. I purposed to use my love of teaching and motion not only to overcome her pain from repetitive athletic injuries but to pay it forward to others.
Over the past 30 years, I've worked diligently to gain what is now a masterful wealth of knowledge in teaching exercise science.
I continue to aspire to be a positive role model for self-empowerment and balanced living in mind, body, and spirit, she also actively works to practices what I preach. I am passionate about continuing to evolve as a teacher and coach to seamlessly blend all formats of health and wellness to meet the learning and lifestyle of my students.
I truly understand that it’s when we balance all the parts of our lives — can we indeed have a pain free life and living!
When I teach, I will challenge you to identify your limitations to healing (posture and function, diet and nutrition, habits and thoughts about healing) and help you identify practical and accessible solutions to dissolve old movement patterns, stories, limitations, and external coping mechanisms. A bit of tough love, honest conversation all surrounded with compassion and care.
I strive to help you make your goals simple to do, fun, engaging and clear, so you can take charge of your future, by getting back to living life the way you want to. I work hard to educate my students how to incorporate corrective exercise to maintain and restore health and function for their entire well-being. You can say that it has become my life pursuit and passion.
Whether it is through Foundation Training, Corrective Exercise, Posture Alignment Therapy or STOTT Pilates, I gained proficient experience in a variety of approaches to rehabilitating an injured musculoskeletal system.
