The 4-Hour Body Egoscue Exercises

One of my new favorite books is The 4-Hour BodyAn Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman by Timothy Ferriss.  


The 4-Hour Body is a sequel of sorts to the best-selling The 4-Hour Workweek.  


This time his mission was to discover just how much he could get his body to do with the least amount of effort and the shortest time possible.  


Ferriss underwent what he terms “body hacking” (scientific experiments he put his body through to scientifically quantify myth vs. reality when it comes to changing the human body).  Ferris tested a variety of exercise and nutrition programs to learn how to control the human body the same way a hacker does with a computer.


He put supplements,diets, exercise and injury rehabilitation/prevention programs on trial to accurately measure what programs truly work and more importantly, what do not.  By doing so he was able to quantify their effects on his body before and after trying them.  



The result?  


Ferris came up with a definitive way to get “the biggest bang for the buck”.  Each chapter provides readers with a proved and step-by-step approach where the smallest effort, applied at the right places produces super-sized results.  


Guess what he tested for chronic musculoskeletal and joint pain?  Yep, you guessed right!  Egoscue®!  Now, I know without a shadow of a doubt that posture alignment therapy works very well.  My clients, family and close friends all certainly know, but often there is skepticism in the general population.




I can only speculate, but I believe it's because posture alignment therapy is so simple, it’s profound.   And to the outside and untrained eye, it just looks to easy to be true.  In the chapter on Reversing Injuries Ferriss discusses his own unique and initial skeptical experience with The Egoscue Method (see pg. 302-306).


Ferriss readily admits that he had been introduced to postural therapy years ago, but for a variety of reasons, had never pursued it as an option for addressing his own chronic pain. Personally dismissing it for a variety of reasons, Tim had the same skeptical view of corrective exercise as many do, but out of curiosity and opportunity, went along with his friend who had an appointment at the Egoscue Phoenix clinic.

I laughed when I read that!  I wish I had a dollar for every instance a client of mine has had the exact same experience.  I know Ferriss was amazed and couldn’t believe it.  To the inexperienced it was too easy to be true!  But to a seasoned veteran of who both practices and teaches Egoscue University Certified Posture Alignment Therapy,  it didn’t surprise me at all.


Timothy Ferriss’ experience was exactly typical of the vast majority of mine and other Posture Alignment Therapy clients.  Why?  Because instead of “slapping a band-aid on the symptom” as I like to call it, Tim allowed himself the opportunity to identify and treat the root cause of the problem.  His therapist was able to show Ferris that the site of his pain was not the source of his problem.


Instead of chasing after his back pain symptoms, Ferris was given a full postural evaluation, tested for compensations and dysfunctions of his major load joints, and had a corrective exercise menu generated to address his unique postural imbalances.


The result? His so called “permanent” injury was reversed!   Ferris went from a dubious skeptic to optimistic believer in a short 90 minutes.  That’s after months and months of daily chronic pain!  Wow!


He also talks about his experience doing the Supine Groin Progressive in the Tower.

Ferriss came to postural therapy with a nasty trifecta of skepticism, tight hip flexor/hamstrings and upper back pain.   Profoundly, he left PAIN FREE.  That’s the simplicity of treating the Body as A Unit!  I'd love to know what you think!
