At Pain Free Posture MN you will be working with Deb Preachuk, Affiliate Instructor of the Egoscue University certified Level-II Postural Alignment Specialist, certified by The Egoscue University.
Postural alignment therapy consists of a program of corrective exercises designed to retrain the biomechanical and neuromuscular systems of the body, and thus restore balance and function. The process addresses the underlying mechanical disturbances in the body, it restores integrity and provides stability to the whole system.
Your first session will be approximately 75-90 minutes in length and will begin with an interview and health assessment. A thorough evaluation of the your health history, including past injuries, therapies, level of activity and medical conditions will be discussed.
You will then have posture photos taken, gait analyzed and go through a series of functional tests. These assessments are crucial in selecting the unique corrective exercises required to address your chronic pain. The postural assessment is made looking at the the relationship of the four major load bearing joints in the body - the ankles, knees, hips and shoulders - to each other and relative to our blue-print design.
Be mindful that Posture alignment therapy is based on the premise that the human body has a specific design posture and that deviations away from the design posture can cause pain, either at the site of the deviation or elsewhere in the body. Posture Alignment Therapy using the Egoscue method empowers you, the patient, to correct your alignment, leading to a resolution of pain, prevention of injury, increase in performance capacity and an increased general sense of well being.
The design of the human body is based on a grid. In the front view, the eight major load joints of the body. The shoulders, hips, knees and ankles, should line up horizontally and vertically. The feet and the kneecaps should be pointing straight ahead.
In the side view, the head should be upright. The shoulders, hips, knees and ankles should sit on a plumb line placed just in front of the ear lobe, down to just in front of the ankle bone.
When the body deviates from this design, it is ‘out of alignment’. Misalignment of the major weight-bearing joints in the body results in undue stresses, eventually leading to wear, pain and limited ranges of movements. The body is a highly integrated structure, it is renewed and regenerated by movement and the force of gravity. We are designed to move and our modern day lifestyles do not provide our bodies with enough positive stimulation to maintain full function. The bones of the human skeleton are supported, held and moved by muscles. When somewhere in the body, muscles are over working or under working and not performing as they were designed to, postural misalignment will result. Muscular imbalances leave the body vulnerable to injury.
Extended periods of inactivity cause the posture muscles of the body to become either weak and elongated or tight and contracted. Tight contracted muscles can adaptively shorten over time, and will contribute to pulling joints out of alignment.
Intensive activity can also contribute to postural misalignment: repetitive working or sporting activities can set up specific muscular imbalances in the body which over time will lead to dysfunction and compensations throughout its kinetic chain.
The body needs an environment that will provide it with a wide variety of balanced and positive movements
After an explanation of your postural deviations, you will be taught a series of gentle exercises and stretches to correct your posture and alleviate symptoms.
Typically we see new clients on a weekly basis, but time in between appointment varies depending on a multitude of variables such as adherence, finances, etc.
Please keep in mind our Posture Alignment Therapy Program is not a quick fix and requires your dedication and determination to get well. Committing to change and adherence to your exercises on a daily basis, keeping your scheduled appointments and communication with your therapist will enable you to achieve your goals and achieve a pain free and functional lifestyle!
Sessions are typically 55 minutes in length; however, additional time may be booked in half-hour allotments. Please arrive a few minutes early to receive your full session.
Exercise clothing should be comfortable (may be loose fitting but not bulky), socks or barefoot only. On the day of your initial appointment, be sure to layer your clothing. Postural assessment and photos will be taken so we need to be able to see body landmarks such as the feet, ankles, knee joints, shoulder joints, and scapula. Shorts and a tank top work nicely.
If you are a rehabilitation/crossover client, please bring all physiotherapy notes, charts, and x-rays with you to your first appointment.
