Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths for Sore Muscles

Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths for Sore Muscles

Did you know that magnesium is an important mineral for muscle function and recovery from training? It can also relax you and help you sleep better.  One of the easiest ways to supplement with magnesium is taking a bath with epsom salts (for transdermal absorption)!

In my opinion, there is a BIG difference between muscle soreness due to the positive effects of a well designed fitness program or long duration activity of daily living activity versus chronic muscle and joint pain due to postural imbalances in the musculoskeletal system.

One of the ways I actively recover from physically demanding workouts and treat my body with extra special care by taking a nice long Epsom Salt bath.

Not only do I personally use Epsom Salt baths on a weekly basis as a recovery tool, but I also encourage all my students and clients to take them on a regular basis because of the multiple health benefits they can provide.

Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths for Sore Muscles

According to Princeton University, Epsom salt bath can assist in relieveing minor aches and pains.  Espom salts contain magnesium and sulfates (which are both easily absorbed through our skin) which maks Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits.

Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including:

  • regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes
  • reducing inflammation
  • helping muscle and nerve function
  • helping to prevent artery hardening
  • improve the absorption of nutrients
  • flush toxins and
  • help ease migraine headaches

According to the Epsom Salt Council

"Magnesium is important in that it helps keep enzyme activity regular in your body, and it helps your bodily functions to run smoothly. More than half of all Americans have a magnesium deficiency, which is believed to be a factor in all kinds of health problems . Sulfate also plays an important role in the way in which your body works: It has a role in the formation of brain tissue and joint proteins, and it can strengthen the walls of the digestive tract".

Other Benefits of Epsom Salt Baths:

  • helps muscles relax
  • eliminate toxins
  • reduce inflammation
  • help bruises to fade
  • relieve stress/tension
  • improve sleep
  • can aid in fighting the flu/colds
  • can assist in helping relieve migraine headaches

Another added bonus?  An Epsom salt bath can help soften and exfoliate the skin AND it's great for the health of your house plants!  NOTE:  If you are pregnant or have an existing medical condition, consult with your medical provider before using Epsom salts.

I personally purchase bigger quantities of the Dr. Teal's brand from my local Costco (without the essentail oils added in).   You can get two large bags for a really reasonable price (around $7.00), and I just add the essential oils in to them on my own to keep the cost down.  You can also find and buy them at most pharmacy and grocery stores.

On an important side note, I want to clearly emphasize that I encourage Epsom Salt baths for pain relief due to normal muscle fatigue/delayed onset muscle soreness.  The kind of sore you experience from a healthy workout experience of pushing your own personaly physical limits.

I am in no way saying that epsom salts will relieve chronic pain due to musculo-skeletal joint imbalances that can only be corrected with a systemic corrective exercise program.  That is an entirely separate issue and I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have on that subject.

So if you are an avid exerciser and want to add another self-care routine into your preventative health and body maintenance tool box, why not treat yourself to 20 minutes of personal restoration with an Epsom Salt Bath.  Your mind - body and spirit will thank you!  Enjoy!

Questions?  We'd love to hear from you.  Remember, we're in this together and I am here to help!
