I'm pleased to announce a new therapeutic modality to our list of corrective exercise services here at Pain Free Posture MN.
On Tuesday this week I received word that I passed my 5th and final test to complete my Level 1 Certification as a Corrective Exercise Specialist with The BioMechanics Method.
I was deeply touched to also receive the most wonderful welcome from TBMM on their Facebook page which read:
So why another certification and this one in particular? All of the services offered here at Pain Free Posture MN are corrective exercise modalities that have the proven ability to help people overcome the debilitating effects of chronic muscle and joint pain.
However, I am a big believer that you are more than just a body. It's important to be able to offer creative corrective exercise solutions outside of a "one-size fit's all approach". Perhaps it's best summed up by Anthony Carey of Function First who recently wrote:
"As health and fitness professionals we should be assuming a best practices, evidence based strategy in our work with clients, athletes and patients. And as new research provides valuable insights along with practical experience, we evolve."
I almost cried when I read his blog post An Approach vs A Method: You Can't Get There From Here. Carey literally put pen to paper of what has ben sitting in my heart over the past 9 months. He goes on to say:
"our core values are to improve the quality of motion and the quality of life of every client we are given the privilege to work with. Frankly, we can’t do that if we try to force every client into a recipe that we whipped up before we ever met them."
I couldn't agree more. I'm not saying that there is less value in any of the other modalities that I offer, because I've watched them all work. But I want to be able to have the freedom to customize programming for my clients, and The BioMechanics Method offered me that creative solution!
That said, there were THREE reasons behind my drive to get this particular certification.
So what specifically am I referring to? One of the biggest areas that assists the process of healing from chronic muscle and joint pain is the prgression and sequencing of non-manual Self Myofascial Release (SMR) techniques. Self-Myofascial Release techniques are simple exercises to restore the fascia and connective tissue surrounding muscles, joints and nerves. Easy to do exercises are peformed on small balls, foam rollers, rubber bands or other piece of eqipment to help relieve inflammation, pain, fatigue, improve flexibility, function, performance, and reduce injuries.
What I love about in particular about The BioMechanics Method is that it has a comprehensive plan that allows me to identify, evaluate and correct both musculoskeletal and neuromuscular imbalances that cause pain. The process includes:
Basically, it's the whole package! I personally love that The BioMechanics Method of chronic pain relief begins with the INCLUSION of non-manual Self-Myofascial Release (SMR). So if you're a current client of Pain Free Posture MN, you can easily see how all these things have been happening.
In my professional opinion, Non-manual SMR is a part of the evolution of my journey and can be a missing piece of the puzzle to some clients to fully break the CUMULATIVE CHRONIC PAIN AND INJURY CYCLE.
If you are a subscriber to this blog then you well know that in order for the body to fully heal, you have to address the entire kinetic chain. That means that you treat the body as a unit.
With The BioMechanics Method, I have a progressive sequencing of self-myofascial release techniques I can share with my clients so they learn and apply it on their own, in addition to stretching and corrective exercise. Most people think of SMR as foam rolling, and while foam rolling is a component of SMR, many people with chronic pain cannot start with the foam roller. You have to prepare the tissues and work with the client to not overload them too fast.
Now, I certainly do not want anyone to worry. If you're doing posture alignment therapy, pilates, or myofascial release all by themselves, and it's working for you, it's just fine. Nothing will change for you.
