Ask a Posture Pro| David Newhan's Comeback Attempt
Over the past two days, I've highlighted media publications featuring posture alignment therapy. I do believe that postural therapy is about to hit The Tipping Point, when the social collective becomes aware of a movement and it begins to enter the everyday stream of consciousness.
Today I'm sharing a story I came across back in March 2011. Bob Harkins of NBC Sports Hardball Talk wrote an article on the difficulties players face on the road to a starting position in major league in baseball. One story in particular in this seven part series that caught my attention. It was about San Diego Padre's infielder/outfielder David Newhan.
This article was about a player trying to make it back to the MLB.
David Newhan's last pro season was in 2008 and ended due to a surfing injury accident in late 2009.
Newhan injured his C2 vertebrae when he hit a sand bar after diving off his surf board. The injury, known as “The Hangman’s Fracture,” is the same injury that left actor Christopher Reeve a quadriplegic. Harkins states:
"The Padres are giving the 37-year-old Newhan a chance to make a comeback. And though they are not committing to Newhan even making the Triple-A roster, they say they’ll find a spot for him somewhere in the organization if he wants it."
San Diego's North County Times gives a full interview and report on Newhan's story. Entitled PADRES: Newhan trying to return to big leagues after serious surfing injury, journalist John Maffei interviewed David Newhan and discusses his miraculous survival of a C2 vertebrae “Hangman’s Fracture“ of the neck.
In March 2011 at age 37 years, Newhan was working diligently to return to the major league after a one-and-a-half year absence. He was very realistic about his potential return to the MLB. It would take a miracle.
“I really don’t know why I’m breathing or why I’m not in a wheelchair,” Newhan said. “The fact I’m not is a blessing. I’ve been given another opportunity, and I’m trying to make the most of it.” ~ David Newhan
Later on in the article, Newhan discusses his rehabilitation which included Egoscue and Patch Fitness workouts at Torrey Pines High School.
