Have you seen Reebok's CrossFit Campaign, The Sport of Fitness has Arrived? I love it! The Sport of Fitness commercials REALLY motivate me! In fact, they completely captured my attention back in 2011. CrossFit appeared to be a natural progression and MORE of what I was teaching and doing here at Pain Free Posture MN, and that had a huge appeal to me both personally and professionally. It had components of functional fitness programming plus the Olympic weight lifting and gymnastics movements that really appealed to me as a former competitive athlete!
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program designed to help people gain a broad and general fitness. Programming concentrates on constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity to achieve overall physical fitness, so people are prepared for any physical challenge.
Founder of CrossFit, Greg Glassman says:
"Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand. pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc., hard and fast. As a Corrective Exercise and posture restoration specialist, I offer a wide continuum of therapeutic modalities and services. At one end, it usually begins with assessing posture and implementing a well designed self-myofascial release, stretching and corrective exercise programming sequence to help a client overcome chronic muscle and joint pain. Once that is established we move on to programming that enhances one's ability to perform activities of daily living with easy, help improve overall fitness, AND maximize athletic performance.
Corrective exercise can and does progress to the sports performance end. A huge part of my job is dedicated to helping accomplished, elite and professional athletes of every sport enhance their athletic performance, minimize injury and maintain musculoskeletal balance.
As an athlete comes into full balance we teach them how to using the body as the machine, and to move it in every plane and range of motion possible while at the same time having a FUN and play-like quality.
A fully functional body should truly do amazing things like run, jump, lift, throw, roll, hop, carry, go over, under and around obstacles freely and equally on both sides of the body.
If we stop playing, and challenging ourselves to do these kinds of movements, we will lose it! The human body will always look for the easy and comfortable way to get a movement done. So like the old adage, you gotta move it or you'll lose it, this is exactly what contributes to muscle and joint imbalances (that can lead to chronic pain) over time.
So considering that I teach others how to move from chronic musculoskeletal pain and progress to improving athletic performance, towards the end of the summer of 2011, I was looking for a place and a way where I could do the same thing, but....
No wonder I was attracted to CrossFit! It had everything I was looking for neatly rolled-up into one tight package. The essence of fun, functional movement like postural therapy (butt kickers, 3 minute drill, bear crawls, inchworm, army crawl walkouts, full sit-ups, you know old-school fitness), plus the strength building my 40+ year old body really needed (Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics maneuvers), and it has changed my life.
I'm leaner, faster, happier and healthier. I belong to a community that supports and challenges me, and I'm doing things that I never even entertained as being possible.
